Welcome our new sibling, Blogging Stocks

Flash Insider would like to welcome our newest blog sibling to the fold. Blogging Stocks debuted today with the help of Weblogs, Inc and AOL. The site will include commentary on all things money and stocks. Unfortunately they haven't started checking into our personal favorite stock yet, but they have gotten the jump on Apple, Google, Walmart, and a few others. Head on over and check em out, but make sure you come back here for all the Flash you can handle.

Flash Player + Adobe Reader = not one plug-in

Knee jerk reaction correction time... yes I did have a knee jerk reaction to what I thought would be a really cool thing. A combo Flash player and Adobe reader plugin and application would hopefully mean a possible slimmer (read more memory efficient) Reader and a more robust Player... but I guess it just wasn't meant to be. Numerous corrections have been flowing out of the former Macromedia heavy-weights so I thought I should write up a quick oops post to help move us forward.

Let's look at this from another angle. Would you prefer a combo app? Maybe an Apple Preview Application mixed with the Flash player in a Flash Paper way... or how about we take some Acrobat functionality and bundle it into Actionscript. I would love to dynamically edit and create PDFs on the fly (for free... I paid a few hundred for the app already, sorry Derek) then we could add a print to PDF functionality to all Flash-based apps that would mimic that great Apple print function... What do you think?

PS: sorry mike, my bad...

We're giving away one free ticket to Macromedia MAX!

mochi flasherYes you heard me, we got our hands on one free ticket to Macromedia MAX. You will be able to hob-knob with the coolest Flashers and Macromedia-heads from around the world and even meet some of those weird Adobe people we've been hearing so much about lately.

FlashInsider friend Mochi Media, creator of the MochiBot Flash tracker, has donated a free ticket for us to give to one worthy person. Of course you will need to get you own transportation and hotel room, but how hard could that be? What's the catch? Well, we will give the ticket to the developer who can whip up the coolest Flash-based RSS reader for the Weblogs, Inc Network in two weeks. The reader must contain the following five feeds by default: FlashInsider <feed>, TVSquad <feed>, SlashFood <feed>Hack-a-Day <feed>, and Engadget <feed>. The winning SWF will be distributed across the Weblogs, Inc Network for download by anyone who wants it and will contain that crucial piece of MochiBot code that let's you know exactly where in the world that Flash has gone. The winner will be notified via email and will have to give the FLA to FlashInsider for distribution and possible editing. Your SWF could be distributed world-wide via sites like Engadget, Autoblog and even FlashInsider. Plus your name will be mentioned in any post announcing distribution.

How do I enter? Email your SWF to contest@flashinsider.com with 'FlashInsider MAX contest' as the subject and our veteran panel of judges will select the best one. The only requirement is that you add a MochiBot to the SWF. The deadline is Monday, September 26, 2005 and a winner will be announced on Wednesday, September 28, 2005.

Its a News Flash, not Macromedia Flash

Update: Oops, come to find out my dad's interview got bumped up to the Friday before and no one in the family knew. Plus its not like we've had time to watch Dateline lately. Sorry, time to stick to what I know best an leave the TV to those smarter than I. Again a huge apology to those who wondered where the interview was and definitely to my TVSquad blog sibling, who I convinced to post about the interview that had apparently already happened. Back to the Flash.

Quick off topic post for your Sunday afternoon. My dad, Mark Schleifstein, is going to be interviewed on tonight's Dateline on NBC at 7:00 pm EST. He is the lead environmental reporter for the Times Picayune in New Orleans. He also co-wrote the series Washing Away in 2002 that basically predicted what a Category 5 hurricane could do to New Orleans. If you have some free time tonight and want to learn more about Katrina and its effects on the Gulf Coast from the prespective of a reporter from New Orleans, check out the interview.

Happy Anniversary Hack-A-Day

hack-a-dayToday is our blog-brother Hack-a-Day's first anniversary and in honor of this grand event (and in hopes that FlashInsider will one day reach the same momentous occasion) I went and found a great Flash related post over there for all to enjoy. Back on November 11, 2004 Hack-a-Day found a way to use GPS via a Mac and make a custom interface. At the time they recommended using Director for the interface, due to its bitmap capabilities, but now I think we could easily change this to use Flash 8. Now you can do almost everything Director can do with bitmaps in Flash, so why not hook up your GPS to Flash today and then head over to Hack-a-Day to celebrate the anniversary.

Hurricane Evacuation, or What happened to FlashInsider today?

Hey, everyone. Just a quick non-Flash post to let you know why no posting lately... Katrina has hit FlashInsider.com. Well, not really, just me and possibly David Robinson. As you may or may not know I am actually from New Orleans, LA and yesterday we were forced to evacuate the city due to the coming storm. My wife and I drove up to Atlanta, GA and are currently crossing our fingers that our apartment will be livable when we are allowed to return. In the mean time I'm a little more concerned about my parents who have ridden out the storm inside the Times Picayune. (this is the only time i'm going to name drop here, ever) My father is the lead environmental report for the Times Picayune and has been reporting live and direct from the heart of the city inside the Times Picayune building. If you are looking for ways to help your fellow Americans along the Gulf coast please give blood and money to the American Red Cross. If you are from the city stay where you are. The city is said to have extensive flooding currently. If you want to see more hurricane coverage check the Times Picayune, Wikipedia and Flickr (of course). This storm is predicted to cause more damage than any in our history. And now back to the Flash fun.

Back when Engadget was a BBS

future splash becomes flashGrand-daddy Engagdet was sitting around the Weblogs, Inc. house the other day telling all of us grand-blog-babies stories about the old days and today he posted a great one. Engadget has one long post up from way back in 1985 via the BBS's historical (or histerical as my grandpa says) archives.

When you're done seeing Engadget back in the day, why not check out our history. Yes go back to a time before Macromedia Flash and read the Grand Flash Master Jonathan Gay's history of Flash. It starts and ends with LEGOs, awesome. Then, if you still haven't had enough history, check out the Macromedia story for a good night tale of your own.
